I actually do have a list of pets I'd eventually like to get. Obviously I wouldn't get any sort of pet without doing the appropriate research and making sure I have the financial responsibility and appropriate amount of free time to devote to making sure they're well cared for. But the list goes:

Cats (always loved cats - I have actually never NOT owned a cat)
Ferrets
Hedgehog
Chinchilla
Rats

Chickens
Cockatiel
Gouldian finch
Zebra finch
Peach faced lovebird

Chameleon
Russian Tortoise
Bearded dragon
Crested gecko
Leopard gecko

Fish (don't know what kind yet)
Hermit crabs (love having them - properly cared for, they live a long time!)

Obviously I don't want all of these at the same time, but spread out throughout my life. Lol
 
I just want a ferret or two, I've been trying to get one since I was a little lad but my mom always said no. When I moved out I thought my chance had come but then my missus said no...

One day my precious, one day!

I've taught her too much, she's no longer that gullible! ;)

She wasn't even impressed with my plans for a ferret run, they would have been in the outhouse so the house wouldn't even have that odour! :p

As a Kiwi I suppose you have a slightly different view of ferrets than I do?!

I quite like ferrets. I like possums and stoats and tahr too. Just not in the wild in New Zealand is all. Ferrets used to be popular pets here but they were banned a few years back to prevent continuing releases/escapes to the wild. My sister had one. Stinky little thing (the ferret, not the sister), but cute as well.

If I was in the UK, though, I would choose a zorilla over a ferret.

So how long has the ban been in place? And is it a complete blanket ban like it is with foxes? i.e. Not even zoos can hold them?

And yeah, zorillas are cool but ferrets are cheaper and easier to obtain! :p

As would I, if I had the money or space for exotic animals. In a heartbeat.

That said, I wouldn't have one singular zorilla; I'd have a few pairs, try to get them bred up and established. I'd have some Marbled Polecat too!
 
If we're talking exotics then I'd like a small collection of tayra, yellow-throated marten, palm civets, an otter species, kusimanse, a giant squirrel species, New Guinea echidna, jaguarundi, serval, raccoon dog, quoll, kowari, 2 or 3 species of tamarin, potto and golden jackal!

Too much? :p
 
I would like a few Dodos, a couple of pairs of Thylacine, a pair of Laughing Owls, and a few groups of Liverpool Pigeons, Passenger Pigeons and Carolina Parakeets.

Not really considering getting any of those to be honest though...But I would certainly want them!
 
With the help of time travel, I suspect Passenger Pigeon, Carolina Parakeet and Laughing Owl *would* be the wisest three extinct birds to bring back, as all three bred profusely and readily in captivity.

To bring back Liverpool Pigeons you would need to find the buggers first ;) no one knows where they lived even when they *did* live!

since 2002. It is illegal to breed or sell ferrets, but (as with any pest species in NZ) you can keep them so long as you have the appropriate licence and the animal is rendered incapable of breeding. Basically that means they have to be taken from the wild, neutered, and tamed. Generally only rabbiters have ferrets now.
 
When I was in Norwich (in Norfolk UK) last month a lot of the so called beggars had ferrets, I'm used to them having dogs as lures but never seen ferrets before.

I often feel I should carry dog treats so the dog can get something rather than the beggar who will possibly spend it on drink.
 
I'd love to have a cape banded white throat monitor. There aren't that many here in the US, but a few have come sporadically available lately. Might happen next summer if a few things go my way.
 
I'm on the waiting list for an Asian palm civet. Would like to get a fennec fox in the future but the laws are iffy.
 
The only exotic pet I've ever owned was a Carolina anole. My mom was never big on small animals as pets. (and even if she didn't mind them, no one in my house knows how to close a door so any small animals I did have was at risk of death by cat) I've got a few ideas for what pets I'm thinking about getting in the future.

I've always wanted a bird, and doing some research, it sounds like the green-cheeked conure might be a good option for me. I want a friendly animal that I could play and interact with, maybe even teach some tricks to. And they're not as high maintenance or long-lived as large parrots, so it wouldn't be too much for me to handle. But I'd probably have to wait until I'm not living in an apartment, since conures can be quite noisy.

I'm also considering sugar gliders, once my lifestyle is appropriate. Unlike the conure, I could keep some in an apartment, and since they're pretty popular as pets, there are plenty of resources to help me out.

I've thought about a fennec fox, but I just don't think I could provide sufficient care. Might be an option for the far future.

Were I work we have quite a few small exotic animals and the most smelliest and least tame are the sugar gliders. Chipmunks would be a better option. The group of five we have are all tame and very active.
