An update on the pangolians: They are living in The Fragile Rain Forest building and are not expected to go out onto exhibit. They are there for a research project on animal husbandry and welfare.

Some other updates: The prevost's squirrel tunnel has been expanded.

A mesh panel has been added to the clouded leopard exhibit and is hoped to be used for future keeper chats.

Automatic belt feeders have been added in/near the gorilla and bear exhibits.
 
Sabu, the zoo's almost 6-year-old male snow leopard, passed away this morning due to kidney failure.
 
Does anybody know when and why the Nocturnal House was closed and what species were kept in the last years before the closing ? I guess, it was closed togeher with the whole Small Mammal House. For what it is used today ? I've been to Brookfiled a couple of years ago, but I can't remember....

We never had an exhibit building called the "nocturnal house" as far as I know, so I can't help you there, sorry.
 
The Nocturnal House-I call it so-was only a department of the Small Mammal Building. Sorry for the missunderstanding.
 
Oh, it's ok. Although I can't help you with the species part (didn't become a regular Brookfield Zoo visitor until 2008), it closed in the late 90's/early 2000's and was turned into what now is the Hamill Family Play Zoo, which opened in 2001.
 
The small mammal house had quite a collection back then. It was divided in two sections,one was diurnal and the other was nocturnal. I was in Chicago back then and here in my list of species for 1990.
Meerkats -2 groups,golden lion tamarins, lion headed tamarins, cottontop tamarin, emperor tamarin,goeldi´s monkey, tree shrews, malabar and prevost´s squirrels, fishing cat, mink, ermine, hydrax, pocket gopher, elephant shrew,degus, Nocturnal section- jaimaican fruit bats,vampire bats, african zorilla, golden cuscus, brushtail opussum, ,quokkas,kinkajou,night monkeys with young with a sloth, tree porcupine, flying squirrel, sugar glider, chinchilla, spiny mice, jerboa, kangaroo rat, fennec fox and 2 phillipine tarsiers. Outside the small mammal house were large cages with bobcat,canada lynx, yellow throated martins and african crested porcupines.
Of course, some of the spaces were rather small, but it was a grand collection and i am happy to have seen it.
 
Thank you andrew, it was the animal in the wikipedia article picture. The years take a toll from your memory and it was hard to remember what you saw in a nocturnal house years ago from some old notes and photos.
 
Some updates:

A Rodriguez fruit bat has been born, the first in approximately 15 years.

Violet-backed starlings have hatched in the kopje building of Habitat Africa! The Savannah. This is the first known hatch of this species at Brookfield Zoo.

Fish will be added to the watering hole in the giraffe exhibit to help decrease the amount of string algae and duckweed that grows in the water.

Q: Can there be a TV monitor so we can see the pangolins?
A: From Carol Sodaro, associate curator/mammals: "We have only had the pangolins for over a month now and are beginning to learn so much about their behavior and husbandry routine. At this time, the pangolins will be off exhibit and not able to be viewed by guests. In the future, an exhibit may be planned which will allow for guest viewing. This is an exciting opportunity for Animal Programs staff and we hope to be able to share more about the animals in the future."

Yellow-backed duiker Luthi gave birth to a calf this week. The calf will make his/her public debut when he/she is a bit older.

15 gray-banded kingsnake eggs have been laid. This is the first time this species has laid eggs at Brookfield Zoo.

Tapas, the female giant anteater born at the zoo last year, has been sent to the Pittsburgh Zoo.

The three Mexican gray wolf pups have started venturing out of the den.
 
I remember as a kid visiting the zoo in 2001, the Hammil Family Play Zoo had just opened, but I had previously read an article from a year or two earlier mentioning a Small Mammal House. I had no idea they were the same building for years and used to wonder if the SMH was hidden or something, heh.

It definitely seems to be an exhibit that was never well-covered, even the Brookfield Zoo history book, Let the Lions Roar barely describes it - wish I could have visited it back in the day! I love nocturnal houses.

Sad to hear about Maggie. Woke up to the news today. I feel sorry for Kecil but I'm glad the zoo has had a continuity plan for this.
 
A new male bald eagle, named Zeus, is now on exhibit.

Our klipspringer pair will soon be out in an outdoor exhibit. The file I received states that they will be in a yard between the African painted dogs and waterbuck, but I can't think of where the klipspringer yard would be located. Will have to see the next time I get back to the zoo.

There is a new outdoor exhibit near the Reptiles and Birds building and Formal Pool, where the zoo's Galapagos tortoises, radiated tortoises, red-footed tortoises, and yellow-legged tortoises will rotate in and out of that exhibit.

Ari, the zoo's new female sea lion, is now out on exhibit with male Tanner and female Josephine.

Young male gray seals Charles and Ziggy will be moving to the Lincoln Park Zoo sometime this summer.

Kecil has adjusted quickly to the loss of Maggie and recently went out on exhibit with adult female Sophia and her daughter Kekasih. Introductions have gone well.
 
A new finch exhibit has opened in the Australia House. I will go check it out the next time I'm at the zoo.

One of the zoo's pregnant addax has died, and the fetus did not survive. There is one other pregnant addax, and she's due in mid-summer.

Wally, the zoo's male red panda, has died. He would've turned 2 years old next week.

A baby colobus monkey was born last week. The gender is currently unknown.

Any idea what happened to the Addax and Wally?

It seems like zoos aren't very transparent about animal deaths these days. I wonder if it's the media attention.

I have no idea. If there are any hoofstock and/or Wild Encounters keepers around the next time I'm at the zoo, I will ask if they are not busy.
