527) Pied Monarch
528) Varied Triller

Also have heard but not seen quite a few species including Orange-footed Scrubfowl and Spotted Catbird which I hope to see tomorrow.

I'm now in Cairns airport waiting for a flight back to Perth so this will probably be my last set of additions from Queensland (barring a small number of things I am yet to ID)

532) Spotted Catbird
533) Orange-Footed Scrubfowl
534) Australian Swiftlet
535) Superb Fruit Dove
536) Torresian Kingfisher

15) Green Tree Snake

I also got some nice views of species I had already seen including Cassowary, Riflebird, lots of Honeyeaters, Boatbill, Barred Cuckoo-shrike, Forest Kingfisher and Wompoo Pigeon.

I got to these two birds and went "huh?". Googled them and then went "oh, splits"...

One of the people at Cassowary House - and the person who did the bird walks - was a bird taxonomist so it was very interesting to have taxonomic discussions with him. He didn't seem to be too much of a splitter and said he wasn't a mammologist but was 'horrified with what happened' when I brought up the topic of Groves and Grubb (he was particularly horrified about ungulates and lemurs and agreed that the Klipspringer splits amongst others were ridiculous). He said he thought there would be over 11,000 bird species eventually. Being able to discuss taxonomy in real life (as in, outside zoochat) was actually pretty cool.

He also called the Helmeted Friarbird a Hornbill Friarbird which is another split.

After that a trip to Filey Bird Garden let me see a couple of other species:

75. Common Swift Apus apus

2. Great Crested Newt Triturus cristatus
3. Smooth Newt Lissotriton vulgaris

From my garden (25/6/2016):

4. Common Frog Rana temporaria

was that Phil? He loves splitting birds! :D

A few additions from an excursion to Cumbria and Lancashire yesterday - a sunny morning at the butterfly sites gave way to a very rainy afternoon, which washed us out of Leighton Moss and pushed us south towards Morecambe, where we unexpectedly came across a dozen or so Common Eider as consolation.

The new year additions came from the morning, from Arnside Knott and Meathop Moss, Cumbria.

Birds:
323. Tree Pipit - Anthus trivialis

Reptiles:
5. Common Lizard - Zootoca vivipara

Invertebrates (all butterflies today):
67. Dark Green Fritillary - Argynnis aglaja
68. High Brown Fritillary - Argynnis adippe
69. Northern Brown Argus - Aricia artaxerxes

70. Common Blue - Polyommatus icarus

I've just been going through this list and there are two mistakes with this post!

I've accidentally counted Bar-shouldered Dove twice (also #416) however I missed off the last bird from the wait-a-while tour which was seen on a lamp post when driving back into Cairns - a Rufous Owl.

I blame the fact that I posted that after a fairly tiring 20 hour day - got up at 3 AM that morning for a flight from Brisbane to Cairns and I posted that at 11 PM that same night. :p

and with that, here is the monthly round-up:
