From the sign it looks like the Australia house is a popular exhibit at the Calgary Zoo. Why have they not built a new one? Lack of resources?

It used to be two sections. Australia and Creatures of the Night. Australia had western gray kangaroos in an outdoor yard, Bennett's wallaby, Matschie's tree kangaroo, southern cassowary, other birds (including free flying zebra finches), reptiles, and oddly enough, coatis. Creatures of the Night was a reverse daylight nocturnal exhibit with fennec fox, parma wallaby, douroucouli, agouti, bats, reptiles, amphibians, and free-flying barn owls. Creatures of the Night closed some time ago, and now the entire building is closed.

And in response to David Brown's question, lack of resources is most certainly an issue at the beleaguered Calgary Zoo.

By closing this house, we lose red kangaroos, bennett's Wallaby, Parma Wallaby, Matschie's Tree Kangaroo, emu, crocodile monitor, greater malayan mouse deer, indian flying fox and a whole host of birds.

I do not know what the future holds for Calgary. With a new Penguin exhibit about to open and other relatively recent developments such as Destination Africa, Elephant Crossing and the Enmax conservatory admissions have been fairly substantial.

As you may or may not know, the zoo was plagued with a number of high profile deaths in the past years and has been under intense scrutiny. Also, in addition to the Australasian house, the south american and eurasian areas are beginning to show their age and are in need of attention. The question is which are first.

My current understanding is that the zoo is still trying to spring back, and until then i don't see very many new developments and a steady trickle of animals leaving the collection. The number of empty enclosures and missing animals today was substantial, and species previously numerous at the zoo such as agouti are no where to be seen.
