A map of the SF zoo from 1955 pulled from an archived guidebook from that year. You can see how much less spaced-out exhibits were. The original rhino exhibit (southwest pen of the Pachyderm House, below the otters) is noticeably empty, the guidebook doesn't mention any rhinos so I'm guessing any the zoo previously had at the time either recently died or were transferred out.
Also strangely, whoever illustrated this only put 4 bear grottos in the east when there are in fact 5. Currently, one is part of Grizzly Gulch, two are used by Mexican Gray Wolves, and the remaining two house N. American black bears.
