Giant Eland

2013 Chapultepec Zoo

volcano rabbit also known as teporingo or zacatuche (Romerolagus diazi)
It may not look like anything special, but this is a real gem :)

Congratulations, giant eland you are now one of the few zoochaters who have photographed volcano rabbits. Hix, vogelcommando and i are the others. We could call it the Teporingo club.

As i have stated elsewhere on the chapultepec zoo gallery, the mexico city zoos have over 300 teporingos, most off exhibit. The teporingos breed every year, here they breed like rabbits. This colony began in 1980 with a manegement plan elaborated by scientists from the National University of Mexico. Teporingos from the mexico city have been released back into Mount Popocatepetl and recently Chapultepec sent 10 rabbits to Nagoya. The teporingos are the greatest success story of mexican zoos.
