Giant Eland

2013: Smithsonian National Zoo

(Macroscelides proboscideus) Short-eared Elephant Shrew
One of my favorite species still left at the zoo. Not always on display, when they are out they are a lot of fun to watch. Back more than 15 years ago, I got to meet a female they had. She was one of the sweetest animals I've ever met in any zoo; an absolute sweetheart. After I met her, every time I would walk by her exhibit she would run out from her den and beg for me to give her a rub or pick her up from behind the glass. I still reminisce about her every time I pass by her old exhibit in the Small Mammal House and always peak into her old den (which was in the second to last exhibit).

Interesting fact: back then, other highlight animals in the building were lesser bushbabies, ring-tailed mongoose, a leopard cat, and a tiger quoll.
