An old family photo with 1947 written on the back. For various reasons, I believe it's Paignton Zoo.

Certainly looks the same shaped cages as the old carnivore row that was up at the top end of the Zoo. I tried to compare with my 'Paignton tigers' postcard of these cages but that isn't quite conclusive, but I still think it is.

Hey, that looks like completly equal to the current lion indoor cages at Hagenbecks Tierpark....in the year 2015 !

Is that a Lion in there? No stand-off barrier?

The little child is obviously perched on the barrier. You can see its shadow too on her right, below on the wall of the cage. If Paignton, which I think it is, there was definately a traditional barrier for the public.

Except for the floor, the fence, the hight, the width and everything else. But if we don't take that into account, you are right.

tre there any plans for a new lion exhibit at Hagenbeck ? From my point of the view, the lion welfare in the current exhibit hasn't really a bright future...

From memory, this run of cages was still in use well into the 1960's- I can't remember when they were demolished though.
