The first genuine zoo I went to and hence maybe the one closest to my heart.

The other old Polar Bear exhibit.

Aaalborg Zoo 1986 -- First Polar Bear Exhibit

Can you explain this picture please? I can't quite get the perspective; where is the barrier? It looks as if the enclosure is very narrow, and there could be a ditch in front of the bear? Or am I missing something?

I was six years old at the time so all I know comes from what this photo has shown me as I've viewed it over the years. It was my dad who took it. But Toddy is Zoochat's expert on Danish zoos and will no doubt come to our rescue, if I know him right.

I do have some old Aalborg guidebooks at home in Iceland and could have scanned a map if I was still there, but I'm abroad so it will not happen.

I want to say more, but I'm afraid I'll have to give it over to Toddy so that I don't ruin what little is left of my reputation and self-respect here on Zoochat! :D I'm pretty sure though that of the two exhibits (which I seem to recall being on the cat row or next to it) the other one (seen in a different photo) was larger. But Toddy, over to you...

Thank you, Baldur.

The old polar bear exhibit in Aalborg Zoo was a fairly typical concrete grotto before the major renovation in 1998/1999. Unfortunately, I have found no pics of the exhibit but have drawn you a small sketch that I have attached to this post.

The exhibit was basically a concrete land area with an L-shaped water moat around it. The visitors could only view the bears from across the water moats and Baldur's picture is taken from one of the sides. The black square in the sketch is the holding area and to the left would be (and still are) the Big Cat House. You can see where the current polar bears exhibit is situated on the map of Aalborg Zoo.

Back to you, Baldur ;)
