Aalborg Zoo - Orangutan exhibit (2)

The second of the two outdoor exhibits for bornean orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus) in Aalborg Zoo.
The Orangutan House opened in 1978 and features four indoor exhibits and two outdoor exhibits.

The future plan is to build a new Asian Tropical house for the orangs and then turn this building into a schoolhouse/petting zoo. Aalborg Zoo is the only zoo in Denmark to keep orang-utans.

Toddy, thanks yet again for a wonderful set of photos and the accompanying text...top-notch as always! I see that this woefully outdated orangutan exhibit is destined to be renovated, but is there a solid time frame for that to occur? Is funding in place for the Asian Tropical House?

Thanks snowleopard, I'm glad you are enjoying and commenting on the photos I won't be uploading as much as "back in the day" but I will aim to upload complete photographic tours of various zoos, preferably ones that are less represented in the gallery.

Unfortunately, Aalborg Zoo has been struggling financially for a long time. In 2011 they finally secured funding for the new Carnivore House which opened in 2012 (pictures to follow soon). This vastly increased last years visitor numbers and hopefully it will also have a long-term effect.
However, when more money finally arrive the next project will be new exhibits for sea lions and penguins so the orangs will have to wait at least 5 years.

To be fair, this is not the worst exhibit I have seen. The indoor exhibits are pretty standard and while the outdoor exhibits are very substandard at least they can get outside and get some fresh air.
