Aardwolf paddock at Hamerton 05/04/10

One animal (I think the male) lives here, the second in an aviary-style exhibit further round.

Hamerton is one of only three European zoos with Aardwolves; the others being Twycross and the RSCC.

Do twycross have them now?

Sadly not, the last male died a while back.

Hammerton say they have 4 aardwolves, are they all kept separately and are all exhibits on show?

I believe all are onshow. The 1,1 Eastern Aardwolf are kept in an enclosure together. I am not sure whether the 2,0 Southern Aardwolf share an enclosure or not, as I only saw one of them myself last year.

On my recent visit, the signs indicated the pair of aardwolf (eastern) would be in the currently offshow area along with oncilla, tayra & rusty spotted cat. I was told this area would be open by easter, but the birth of rs kittens probably delayed that.

Last year i saw what i think was a southern in the pictured enclosure & another different looking one in a cage just along from this one. I think there were also aardwolf in the cages behind the tree porcupine(now racoon) enclosure. I didnt realise they had 2 southern aardwolf though!

Thats what i had assumed(it looked more, like the ones i'd seen at rscc), but if that was the case,
i dont know where the other southern was/is held.

Given to understand the two southerns are both in the enclosure in the photograph.
