Addax : Marwell : 29 Jul 2016

Addax nasomaculatus. Male.

Having only a few hours to spend at Marwell, I decided that - rather than staking out the tiger enclosure with a gaggle of other photographers, all waiting for a glimpse of the new cubs - I would concentrate on photographing some of the ungulates.

Nearby, I was rewarded with this display from a male addax, who, after casually walking around his exhibit for a while, nibbling on thistles, then decided to have a mad four minutes or so of sprinting round the yard, horning the ground and logs, jumping, and mock-charging me. After which he settled down again as if nothing had happened.

Not sure of the 'cause' of this behaviour - although the vet and a keeper were next door with the oryx (they were vaccinating all the bovids on the day I visited), so that may've had something to do with it.

Much more interesting than invisible tiger cubs though. :)

Tigers, shmigers :p You made a good choice :)

Possible cause = gadfly? Or had he just found a Pokemon Go character on his mobile which he mistook for a gadfly?
