Africa - Hippopotamus Exhibit

Taken 3/8/18.
In this major zoo, filled with popular ABC mammals, the Common Hippo exhibit stands out as one of the better enclosures. Rio Grande takes at least 5 hours to tour but there aren't many exhibits of a high aesthetic quality.

This is one of the best hippo exhibits that does not have underwater viewing; it is large and visitor viewing is from above (including a bridge that spans the narrower part of the pool). I observed the hippos underwater ‘galloping’ pretty quickly, so the space is generous compared to others. Another unique feature is that the end of the narrow part of pool is adjacent to the warthog exhibit!

Is the entire area surrounding the pool cement? I've tried to see if there's grazing space in other photos but couldn't see any.

The left part out of view is the average sized land area that is level enough for the hippos to enter the water; to the right out of view is a steeper dry slope that I believe is too steep for them to exit.
