Otorongo, yes the zoo recently renamed their zones and many of the animals are now in areas that do not make sense geographically. Many of us are scratching our heads about this, but perhaps the names refer to future exhibit changes?

They announced in this months Zoonooz that they will be changin the wayfinding system at the Wild Animal Park in much the same way they did at the zoo. My first instinct was to cringe...

And by the way this ancient cage is better than the new jaguar exhibit at the Zoo--in Elephant Odyssey. There is more vegetation, more use of vertical space, less public viewing on all sides, and a chance for the cats to get a great view outside their exhibit. And the footprint is more or less the same.

But "Africa Rocks?" Ugh.....

@reduakari - I am sure the new jaguar exhibit is bigger and there are trees for climibing. Last summer I saw her climb very high. It also provides a much better vista for the cat than this exhibit - she can look over the canyon behind the road and see most of downtown San Diego and the ocean. All the cat in this exhibit can see is the road beneath it.

You are right the new exhibit is not quite as lushly planted, but I am sure it will grow in within a year or two.

Africa Rocks ties with Urban Jungle for the worst of the new names... :(

The new jaguar exhibit also gives the cats access to the top of the building. Not sure what that looks like since you can only see it if you're on the top deck of the bus tour which I never took.

This exhibit didn't exactly look like this when it was first built. It took years of adding more and more foliage progressively. The new jaguar exhibit is definitely bigger and provides more climbing structures that are a lot higher. The new exhibit also provides much more enrichment, a cave, and a larger pond.

I found out today from fellow ZooChatter Polar Bear (whom I met at the L.A. Zoo) that San Diego has switched its two jaguars. The female yellow jag is now in this exhibit and the black male is now in Elephant Odyssey.
