Do the various hoofstock species still have access to the African Elephant enclosure? Also, what is the approximate acreage of the elephant space? The exhibit is a really nice one for only a couple of elephants and they certainly have a wide area to roam in comparison to many other zoos.
@snowleopard I did not see any of the hoofstock in the elephant paddock in 2019 or in 2020, but last year as far as I could tell it seemed that at least theoretically they could access the elephant area. They would have to cross some shallow water to do so, but it did seem possible. See the two images below for the area connecting the two exhibits.
With regards to the size: I did a quick measurement and it is probably around 4 400 square meters in size, or just over 1 acre. So definitely not the smallest African elephant exhibit I've seen (I believe the paddocks at Olmen and Monde Sauvage are substantially smaller), but also far from the largest (which would be the exhibit at Safaripark Beekse Bergen). But given that the elephants at Pairi Daiza are both retired performance elephants, it is definitely not bad.
The exhibit having some elevation and being on a hillside I personally like visually, and presumably it also provides some exercise and enrichment to the elephants.
