African Crested Porcupine, outside and active during daylight.

I have no idea where in the zoo this was taken. I'm guessing the enclosure between the old rhino house and Tsavo rhino house, but I'm not sure.

Rob, if you can't remember were they were, nobody can!

Porcupines are in the stock list but not on any maps of the era, so that is a bit of a puzzle. It looks like the animal is fairly close and about on your level.

Porcupines were kept in the monkey house around that time, although this doesn't look like one of the islands.

That was my first thought Pygathrix. It seems too bare to be one of the islands. If only I could make out something in the background.

I've had a flash of inspiration. Could this porcupine be in the enclosure where the warthogs are now?

The only problem is that I don't remember seeing them in there.

Was that not used as a rhino paddock? On the old map I have it looks as if it were split into 3 sections, and it just mentions rhino, seemingly for the whole house? I think it was one paddock for each indoor pen of the old house?

Of course, that was how I remember it. Do you know when the Tsavo house was built/opened? And, unrelated question I know, did anything live in the Tsavo paddock (where Sammy and Kitani were on the last walk) before the rhinos but after the bison?

I miss bison at Chester - I know maybe American bison would be a waste of precious space, and they don't really have the 'area' but maybe Wisent would be a nice addition somewhere, quite where I don't know :)

It was used for rhinos originally. Tsavo rhino house opened in 2002, that surprised me, I thought it was not as long ago as that.

The paddock to which you refer was originally two enclosures, American bison on the left and Pere David's Deer on the right, eventually the deer were moved and the bison had the entire area to themselves until the rhinos took over.

Ahh, thanks for the info :). I never remembered the Pere David's deer in next to the bison (mind, I barely remember the bison :p, I never used to go anywhere near as much when I was younger, once or twice a year was good for me :D).

Location confirmed at the eastern paddock of the original rhino house, the site is now occupied by the new cafe, toilets etc
