What point does this serve? This seems like a waste of money. SDWAP and Disney both do things like this because they CAN. They could have put that money towards making their sister facilitiy's elephant exhibit better

Purposes, a more realistic shade structure than utilitrees, allows keepers to hang food and enrichment objects onto it. From an architecture standpoint, it visually breaks up the landscape to give it variety and adds a focal point. It also gives the eye something to compare the size of an elephant to.
I think I might prefer these than utilitrees, course rock work is quite expensive.

Is it too much to ask that if artificial rock is to be created (at great expense), that it at least attempt to replicate real rock or geologic formations that might be found outside of a "Star Trek" stage set?
