Any idea if this was a neutered male? Looks rather large and pudgy for a female. Toronto's females are both far slimmer but then again they have plenty of space to exercise and cubs to keep them busy.
A very good question that I unfortunately do not have an answer to. I was unable to get to the exhibit itself, this was taken from the pathway at the end of it. The main access to this enclosure was blocked off. There was a male in the exhibit with a fully grown mane, I don't know if that sheds any light on it. Looking at this photo again though, I definitely agree with your thoughts.
