Orycteropus

African mixed-species enclosure fencing technic

Square-Lipped Rhinoceros, Common Waterbuck, Situtunga and Roan Antilope mixed exhibit.
What a great barrier picture.

Havent zoos come a long way.
I am sure 100 years ago they would not belive this would contain a a Rhino!
Also it would have been realtively cheap to manufacture.

Is the level of the ground in the exhibit. Closer to the top of the rail than it is to the level of the footpath? A small bit important feature. Let the animals be at our eye level or higher!!

I know that White Rhinos are also called Square Lipped Rhinos. I just dont hear them called Squre Lipped often in Australia. Is it a UK thing?

The White word comes from the African word wide l belive.

This barrier technic is very widespread for rhinos I think (a not so deep moat and a wire/railing for the visitors), but yes, it is positive that the ground is raising inside the enclosure so the animals can be seen on the eye level (lots of zoos missing this exhibition technic).
The square-lipped terminus is more properly than the white denomination, because the later only a misunderstanding as You mentioned correctly ... Anyway, the White Rhinos name as a species name is quite common everywhere (in the Whipsnade Zoo as well) ... furthermore in the Rhino House You can read the Wide Mouthed Rhino denomination, but not definitely as a species name.

And what is Your opinion of this rhino barrier?

Of the 15ft of barrier shown here. I am glad to hear the picture is of the old enclosure.
It is obviously not going to be a strong enough deterent if she really wanted to get out! The first and most important!! feature of a barrier.

It really does make me laugh when looking at old enclosure barriers. Where some are over the top. Did you seen how deep the moats were for lions at the paris city zoo! To the picture at CHester zoo on here of the pigmy hippo enclosure. Where people could pat the hippos!
