African penguin enclosure

That is one of the saddest penguin exhibits I have ever seen, looks like it belongs in a toy zoo...

This has to be up there for worst in the country surely? How deep is the water?

I'm guessing the water has been partially drained - I don't think there'd be much need for the stepping stones otherwise.

That being said, even if the moat were filled to the brim I'd definitely say it was the weakest penguin enclosures in the UK.

I would hope they have an off show area for the night otherwise this could pose a very serious fox risk.

There was a notice on the enclosure stating that water levels in the enclosure had been reduced due to cleaning. This photo uploaded by zoogiraffe a few years ago gives a better idea of what the enclosure looks like when the water is full.

Based on previous discussions about the enclosure, it seems that with Natureland's position next to the coast, the penguins benefit from the exhibit water being natural seawater. The species has even apparently bred in this exhibit! However, the enclosure currently only holds two penguins, which based on signage on the enclosure, are one male (34 years old) and one female (12 years old). With the male being particularly elderly, I can't imagine this a species that Natureland will carry on with for much longer, without serious adaptions to this old enclosure, with it certainly being one of the smallest and weakest penguin enclosures I have seen.
