African swamphen

May 10 2018
This would be Purple Swamphen rather than Purple Gallinule wouldn't it? Or do you call swamphens gallinules in Europe?

My mistake.... I realy thought the English name for this bird was Gallinude but a quick Google-search/translation proofed me to be wrong ! So you are right Great Argus, thanks for the correction !

Purple Gallinule is a legitimate alternative name for Porphyrio porphyrio :) although Purple Swamphen is more commonplace now, in order to make it easier to distinguish this species from P. martinicus in conversation now that the two have been split.

However, if one wantss to be *really* accurate this is an African Swamphen (Porphyrio madagascariensis)

@TeaLovingDave I was thinking it might be, though swamphen seems to be far more widely used now for the sake of separation from P. martinicus. I didn't think P. porphyrio and P. martinicus were one species at one point, they're not that similar.

Interesting, I still don't know all the species differences in the Porphyrio complex.
