Alligator snapper

Crocodile Swamp, Paignton, 13th February 2019
Macrochelys temminckii, large adult. Paignton has had 2 big guys on show since last June, but this was the first time that I had a close view of one of them. I immediately realised that I really needed my 40 mm macro lens, which I had left at home. Maybe I will get another chance one day. The turtle was pestered by a small mbuna cichlid which was nibbling around its eye, and it kept its eye closed for most of the time I was watching it. I would not be surprised if the turtle didn't get its own back one day, although the number of mbuna in the enclosure does not seem to be affected by the turtles or the old saltwater croc which are the heavyweights in there.
