Auckland Zoo’s current American alligator exhibit opened in 2010. The old exhibit was a refurbished pool originally built to house Humboldt penguins. The zoo’s first alligators were two females (sisters) hatched in 1984. One was exported during the 1990’s; while the other (named Doris) lived alone until the arrival of four young females in 2010. They were sisters, hatched in 2002. The four new females were named Dakota, Dixie, Georgia and Tallulah.
Only two of these females remain at Auckland Zoo - Dixie and Tallulah.
