Interesting barrier using this cattle guard but I think most zoo keepers might have a problem with the potential for an animal to make a running dash for it and break an ankle. Also, I have seen many cattle guards with cattle that have managed to get across them and a potentially dangerous animal like a bison being contained by one makes me a little nervous. @Drew: I was shocked to see the cattle guards but even after hundreds of zoo visits there is always something new just around the corner! In this bison/deer exhibit, as well as in the zebra yard, there is a thin electric fence (you can just make out the wire in this photo) that also contains the animals. Nevertheless, a full-grown bison could certainly get spooked and take a run at the guard in order to escape.
