It's outside the zoo? Seems very small.

Yes, outside the zoo (novel eh!).

And yes, I agree is a little small although I only spotted a single bear and this angle probably makes it look smaller than it actually is. Nice construction though and good naturalisitic look but still could be much better (ie some more trees for example).

Not sure how this came about, ie was there always an enclosure outside the zoo and was modified for the bears or whether completely new? Anyone?

It was there since the opening of the Tierpark. Last year they filled the moat and put glas in front. Now there live two very old american black bears.

It was meant as a kind of advertisement of the zoo.

Dresden has raccoons and Warsaw in Poland has brown bears outside the zoo.

San Francisco also has viewing into african savanah from the outside of zoo. Very efective l am guessing that animals would be locked away at night?

I think Dresden has coatis outside the zoo.

I also vote coatis on that one.

In Copenhagen Zoo the elephants and giraffes can be viewed from outside.

Vienna's Giant Pandas and Indian Rhinos can be viewed from the park outside the zoo, although this was through a gate and probably just a circumstance of position but was impressed all the same.

Just to continue the list, Chester has black rhino paddocks which can be seen clearly on the road leading to the car park and London's giraffe paddock is viewable from the bisecting road.
