Whilst watching the flamingos with another ZooChatterer today, we observed some odd behaviour with one of the flamingos and a chick. I've since discovered that this is the adult (male or female) feeding the young on 'crop milk', produced in glands lining the upper digestive tract.
We observed the pair engaging in this activity whilst slowly wading around their pond, in reverse, for periods of five minutes or more; almost as if they were glued together. I've added a short video which illustrates this:
Flamingo feeding chick while reverse-wading
I've seen video of adults feeding chicks on the nest (ie. when stationary), but none (so far) whilst 'on the move' like this.
