The light is being cast by a yellow floodlight on pole in the rear of the exhibit. During a typical winter the snow cover will be fairly constant from mid-November through mid-April. We are having a snow poor winter this season, with just a thin icy layer remaining at low elevations. Some snowfall occurs in October and May...but typically does not last longer than a couple days. We usually have a few freeze thaw episodes in late January and early February, but in a typical winter these are not enough to melt away the season's snow cover....but play havoc on the Fur Rondy's Ice Sculpture displays.
I was toying (dreaming) with the idea of going up there in March. But I just checked Alaska Airlines and Expedia and the cheapest flights from Tucson are over 700 bucks. If I am going to spend that much on a flight, I would rather spend another 300 and fly to Europe.
1) Alaska is very expensive. Still save up and visit some year. I recommend late June or early September.
2) Europe is made for Zoo nerds. Germany and the Netherlands are Zoo Nirvana. Don't neglect to visit a couple of Germany's Wildparks if you do visit Europe!
