Aquaria - Salmon Ladder

Part of the Salmon Ladder in the Aquaria Water Museum in Stockholm, Sweden. A very interesting concept indeed! This ladder of waterfalls connects a tank inside the aquarium to the actual Baltic sea. Each spring the young salmon hatch inside the tank and is later released out into the ocean. In November and December they return and climb up the ladder to spawn in the tank where they themselves were hatched. Should be quite a view and visitors are invited to come and see when the salmon returns.

Neat idea, in theory. How do they make sure that the tank smells the same to the salmon several years after they leave?

I am not really sure actually. It seems that they are hatched in an incubator. Perhaps you can learn more here on their english website.

That is really impressive. Is it a smell they follow? There must be more to it. As surely smells change in the wild as well.
