The walkway in the photo connects a couple of the massive pavilions that make up this world-class aquarium. Interestingly enough the design team behind the opening of New England Aquarium (Boston) in 1969 is the same team that created the National Aquarium in 1981. With all due respect to New England, which is a solid, top 15 American aquarium, the Baltimore facility is bigger and better via the use of modern exhibitry and is a top 5 American aquarium. The 4-level Giant Ocean Tank at the New England Aquarium is mirrored by the 5-level Baltimore establishment, only with the use of much more glass viewing areas and acrylic for the tanks.
Peter Chermayeff has worked on several other famous aquariums (amongst many other places): Tennessee Aquarium, Osaka Aquarium and Lisbon Aquarium.
