Gazella gazella cora (according to Zootierliste - I don't claim to be able to sort gazelles out). Adult male. Small paddock on the site of the current Asian Plains exhibit, Chester, August 1986. Scanned from a Kodachrome slide.

I believe that the first animals were brought back to Chester by British servicemen who were stationed in Aden, which was a British enclave before it was incorporated into the Yemen. I guess that they were young animals that were wild caught as kids, but I don't know that for sure. Initially they did quite well and I remember seeing animals at Dudley and Bristol too, but I don't know whether they were imported or bred at Chester.
@gentle lemur ah thank you! Very interesting. I would assume breeding would have had to occur considering how many other British zoos did get them in recent history (ie Blackpool, Dudley, and London etc.).
