Here is yet another zoo that will have to make an important decision in regards to its elephants before the AZA requirements are enforced in September 2016. In my opinion the choice to bring in Indian rhinos would be an obvious one, although they wouldn't have trunks to be able to reach browse hanging from the hideous metal "trees".
More than a year ago on this thread I mentioned that the zoo would do well to bring in Indian Rhinos to replace the aging elephants, and sure enough in the brand-new Master Plan there is mention of that possibility (along with Visayan Warty Pigs). The zoo is hedging its bets but the options of a 3, 5, or even 7 acre Asian Elephant habitat were not recommended and so Indian Rhinos in a half-acre exhibit would be the wise decision. El Paso's current two female elephants are extremely old (46 and 61 this year) and I'd be truly shocked if the zoo still had elephants by the time of the next Master Plan.
