Asian Elephants

A nice group, I wonder does the bull have access to the group at all? I know that Colchester bull is in a separate paddock as is the case with most elephants but i wonder why, is it just the handling problems or the fact that the hierarchy is female dominated. It has always puzzled me why they can't share one large paddock rather than 2 smaller ones.

Their is no adult bull at Twycross (and hasn't been for a very long time) all calves born to this herd have been conceived through AI. There is currently no facility for housing one or any plans to rectify this in the short term (sadly)

He's an invisible bull i.e. (as Nisha says), he doesn't exist!:D They have never had one due mainly, I think, to problems connected with housing or managing one.

This is an interesting photo. This latest calf looks strong and well grown unlike the previous 'Ganesh' that died.

Thanks for that folks, any way personally speaking, I prefer cow Asian elephants over African ones any way, they look much nicer and domed rather than the sunken backs of the African ones, but don't like the look of the bull Asian elephants, with that large bulbous head.

The first two calves born at Twycross were sired naturally (by Chang?) at Chester. This is as far as I know the only time elephants in the UK have successfully been sent away to stud. A major achievement which gets forgotten about.
