On second thought, all recently posted 1980s lion photos, are possibly Asian Lions. Los Angeles did exhibit them for several years. On loan, I believe, from the Brookfield Zoo.

Yes those are Asiatic, but the story is more complex

The male here is Puki - He is a African/Asiatic hybrid. - Born 1976 at Cheyenne mountain zoo in Colorado Springs, in 1978 was transferred to Audubon zoo in New Orleans and then in 1980 to LA

There was one successful - 18 of February 1982 - two male cubs Oscar and Butch. Oscar was sent in Sacramento where he lived until 1996. Butch went (via Lincoln Park zoo) to East Germany - Berlin - Tierpark Berlin, so he become their main breeding male since 1984 till the mid 1990' or so
One more thing - Puki was known at LA zoo under the name Bhratar.

The line was phased out as far as I know, because they were all not as pure as thought. The first pure indian lion born at berlin was in 2001.
