The original plans for Trail of the Tiger listed sun bears as the inhabitants of this exhibit, and so it ended up being a little bit of a surprise to see Asiatic black bears in the enclosure. Woodland Park Zoo is sending its two sun bears (1.1) to Virginia Zoo in the hope that the warmer weather will entice breeding, but does that mean the Asiatic black bears will rotate with the sun bears? Or is the zoo building a brand new exhibit for the new bears?
I read that Virginia just finished building a new Sun Bear exhibit on Woodland Park's blog, so I imagine that there will be a brand new habitat for the sun bears.
The exhibit that the binturong were kept in was built with the intentions of housing Sun Bears. I assume that this is where the new Sun Bears will be kept and that the binturong will be moved elsewhere. There's not really space to add a new bear exhibit into Trail of the Tiger but a new binturong exhibit addition is possible and more likely.
