So the new big sandy area is joined to the old enclosure? Approximately how much extra space does it provide?

Roughly double. The walkway that separated the old lion and tiger enclosures has been filled in-if you zoom into the centre of the picture you should still be able to see the old stairway, which is now incorporated into the 'temple ruins.'

Essentially, you now walk 'up and around' this exhibit, rather than the previous terraces 'around and through.'

Thanks. I certainly like what they have done in the new part. This is ZSL landscaping at its best, similar to what they did in Tiger Territory.
