Not sure why they put that in the lion exhibit - they commonly but these into large herbivore exhibits for feeding and/or playing/exercise materials - but he did seem to show some interest.

Apparently big cats like tigers and lions love to play with it. Amersfoort does this as well with their tigers, and it's a great form of enrichment there.
 
@Jarne Other animals also get recycled Christmas trees, like the Indian rhinoceroses, Asian elephants, American bisons and Roosevelt elk and Wisents.

I suspect that herbivores would interact differently with coniferous trees than herbivores, although I doubt they would munch much of them.
