"Tar pit" is a misnomer as the substance is asphalt rather than tar, and it comes up in relatively shallow seeps rather than pits. The seeps became covered with water and became deeper pools that resembled pits. The megafauna found within them collected over a period of 50,000-10,000 years ago.
