Assorted Hoofstock Pits/Grottoes/Enclosures

Aug. 16th, 2010.
The zoo has a curious set of exhibits that are looked down upon and feature high cement walls. There are quite a few hoofstock enclosures set into the ground like that, as well as a set of reptile/watefowl exhibits that also feature concrete walls and are deep-set into the earth. Visitors gaze down at the animals in enclosures that must have been built quite a few decades ago.

I remember the Louisiville Zoo having exhibits like this in the late 1980's. The first and only time I've seen gemsboks were in an exhibit like this. Isn't this frowned upon now?
