Auckland Savings Bank (ASB) funded the purchase of Kashin the elephant, who arrived as a four year old in 1972. She replaced the elephant Malini, who died the previous year.
A competition to name the ASB elephant chose the name ‘Kashin’ as the winner. It’s a play on words (cash in); but also means ‘compassionate’ in Hindi.
The money box on the left was released in the 2000’s; but was replaced with the more accurate version (no tusks) on the right in the 2010’s.
