It's a good thing the zoo let the tapirs utilize the upper area of the habitat, as in a documentary I saw about the behind-the-scenes aspects of the Lied Jungle, Dr. Simmons, the zoo's then director/now director emeritus talked about the ramp/wooden staircase leading up to the main habitat from the BOH (back of house) and how tapirs navigate steep inclines.
I’m so glad the tapirs finally have access to the upper half of the enclosure. In the past they used to be restricted to just the lower portion of the habitat. It used to have a lot more plants on the top, but obviously the tapirs destroyed most of the plants.
