Australia - Walk-Through Aviary Signage

July 16th, 2010.
I would be a bit concerned with masked lapwings in a walk-through aviaries, simply because they can swoop faster and more accurate than magpies! Of course, this is not always the case but I have had experiences with them

Only when they are breeding. Keep only one sex and there should be no problems.

interesting that (given that its an Australian aviary) they give Nettapus coromandelianus the common name of Indian Pygmy Goose rather than, say, Cotton Pygmy Goose or White Pygmy Goose.

Yeah, I think I've ONLY ever seen masked lapwings in walk-through aviaries come to think of it. Never been attacked by one...

Only when they are breeding. Keep only one sex and there should be no problems.

When I went to Segwick County I think they had a male and a female, because they mated in front of me, but didn't seem at all aggressive.

From experience, as long as they don't nest on or next to a path they are usually alright in walk-through aviaries.

They had a nest on island in the middle of the pond where the ibis are nesting. They had couple of chicks there and there is no complain from guests of aggressive lapwings. Although we had more aggressive canada geese on the zoo ground.
