Australian Echidna Chester Zoo 11 February 1995

Australain Echidna (Tachyglossus aculeatus) in the old small mammal house. Previously they were kept in the Tropical Realm in an enclosure which is now a shrubbery. This was situated by the crocodile pool.

Sorry to ask this now, but this photo appeared on the uk home page and caught my eye. During what period did Chester keep the echidna? I don't remember seeing them on my 1st visit there in 1991(come to think of it i dont remember the small mammal house, i was so pleased to see a polar bear again!) or when i returned in 2000.
It may just be i managed to miss them both times.

I always thought that I saw my first echidna at Chester, that most definitely seems to be the case.
I would absolutely love for a few collections to get them within the UK, Paignton is just too far to travel regularly! ;)
