Baboon Island 26th October 1996

One of only two 'rocks' of this type housing this species in the UK- the other being Paignton's. This one was smaller/simpler in design but viewing wise for the public, was superior to Paignton's- which has a silly wall surrounding it that you can't get close to in order to look at them. I have been here once since they moved to a larger, but rather barer and flatter island enclosure.

When the new island opened the trees were alive and it looked very well. Not surprisingly the trees did not last long. Now it has lots of rocks and climbing equipment - I posted a photo of it the other week. The new island as I first saw it will be among the next photos I post.

When the Baboons were moved off this island the zoo was going to get some Barbary Sheep for it but did not because of fears of foot problems, although I should have thought the rocks would have kept hooves trimmed. I was disappointed as I like Barbary Sheep. Lemurs were installed instead of course.
