Baboons + escapees - Mendoza Zoo, April 2016

How were the youngsters escaping? It appears that the baboons would be a recipe for disaster, whether it would be chewing the water hose, engaging with visitors, possibly receiving sickness from humans, etc. I'm surprised that the zoo wouldn't board up the cage, even though the enclosure already looks like a sturdy prison cell to begin with!

I have no idea how they were getting out. I was very surprised to see this, with visitors getting so close. Passing staff weren't fussed, and visitors were ignoring barriers near the enclosure. All trouble. One of the concerning features was that almost none of the adult baboons seemed to care. In other similar (accidental) situations which I've come across, the adults are watching closely and can be quite defensive when visitors come close to escaped young. Could this mean that this is a more long-term/regular arrangement?

I can remembr seeing a similar sight at the - luckily - now closed Zwartberg Zoo in Belgium at the beginning of the 1990-ties. Here young Vervet monkeys were able to come to the quite large wire-mesh and were walking between the visitors.

What will happen to the large colony of baboons when the zoo is changed into an ecoparque ? This all uncertain now.
