There's a practice of early weaning to encourage female to breed again as soon as possible.
And several of such hand-reared chimpanzees are sold to the circus!!!

If nothing else, this ghastly photo, and its caption (thank you, E.m. - for somebody who obviously cares about animals this cannot have been an easy photo to take) shows that there is work to be done by Monkey World and similar facilities for decades to come. Quite apart from the indefensible ethics, places like this are, through indiscriminate breeding, acting contrary to any hopes that might exist of one day getting viable pedigree Chimp studbooks established.
Hopefully no more surplus Apes from UK zoos will ever end up in places like this -as happened several times in the 1980's with hybrid Orangutan and surplus Gorilla males. I doubt that would be countenanced nowadays as there are bachelor male and other facilities to take them. But I'm still nervous if I hear of Primates going to 'Eastern Europe'.
The really sad thing is that there are some photos of what appear to be good eagle and vulture aviaries. And it seems that this site has abundant space. With a director who really cared about what s/he was doing this could be a fine zoo.
2007-born chimpanzee female, despite being successfully reared by mother, was weaned at the age of 1 year.
The baby depicted here was born in 2010, abandoned by mother.
At 2010, according to the list of animals for purchase placed on its site of Russian State Circus company, the price of chimpanzee was 775000 rubles (about 25000 dollars for that time's course).
