Baby Western lowland gorilla born 27/09/2012!

Badongo x Hlala Kahili! Pic taken at 4 hours old!

This takes me back rather as HK is very similar facially in appearance to her mother N'Pongo. Good news indeed that she has now had the successful birth of Badongo's first offspring.

Congratulations to everyone at Jersey. I hope this will be the first of many infants for Badongo.

Excellent news. This is the first ape birth at Jersey for sometime, last one was Gorilla (?). I think the Orangutans last bred in 1999.

Congrats to the Jersey / Durrell Primate Team.
A new area has begun ... and hopefully more to follow soon!

The last (successful) Gorilla birth was also to this female (HK) but that young female 'Ya Pili' died at around 4 years old. Technically not the last birth as they have said she had one or two more miscarriages since. Hopefully this new baby will turn things around a bit for her now.

Her grown up son 'Mapema' (Ya Kwanza's only surviving offspring), is a breeding male with several offspring, now in Duisburg Zoo.
