Looks like a Nuttall's Woodpecker (Picoides nuttallii) to me. It could also be a Ladder-Backed Woodpecker (Picoides scalaris), though, based on what I can see, I'd say the former. Lucky you, I've always wanted to see a woodpecker!
Well I have, just never have identified the species. The most recent one might have been a Red-Headed Woodpecker but I can't remember if the head was all red or not.
I had never seen a woodpecker in the wild until two years ago, I saw a great spotted woodpecker at Cotswold Falconry Centre, and saw green woodpecker at Hamerton Zoo in May this year.

I find it so odd that people have struggled to see wild woodpeckers?! I have seen many greater spotted at the local parks and occassionally in my inner city garden in Coventry. Where I study in Cambridge we often get Green woodpeckers on the lawns - I guess as no one goes on the grass its safe for them!
Also in a recent trip to America, I got a great view of a Pilated woodpecker from my B&B in North GA.
Obviously Im just at the right place at the right time!
green woodpeckers are becoming more common, I see some every week ain atleast on of my gardens, they are ground feeders so tend to be more visable as they fly for cover. I have yet to see a lesser spotted woodpecker though. we get the greater spotted in our garden now and then.
