baird\'s tapir chapultepec zoo This species is very endangered in mexico, found only in protected areas of the state of Chiapas, perhaps in Oaxaca or Quintana Roo states.
I recently found interesting information on the status of baird´s tapir in Mexican zoos. There are only 11 animals. Surprising for a mexican protected species. Zoomat in Chiapas has the only breeding group with 6 animals. Xcaret in Cancun, Guadalajara zoo, Leon zoo, Merida zoo in the Yucatan and Chapultepec zoo in Mexico City all have one male tapir. The tapir in Merida was born at zoomat. The Xcaret tapir is from Belize. The tapirs in Chapultepec, Leon and Guadalajara were born in US zoos. The Leon zoo tapir, Scooter actually appeared in the Mel Gibson movie Apocalypto. Zoomat has held tapirs since 1952. The founder animals were taken from the wild. Zoomat has exchanged their tapirs with Belize zoo tapirs to keep genetic variation. Africam Safari park in Puebla has the only asian tapir in mexico.
I made a special trip to Wuppertal zoo in Germany last year to see this species - do you happen to know where the ones in Germany were sourced from? I know there are two other single males (born in Wuppertal) in other German zoos including Berlin.
Wuppertal received 2,1 in 1994 (1,0) and 1996 (1,1) from the US, an older female "Tanya" (born 1980 at San Diego) and her two grandchildren "Tonka" (born 1993 at Sedgewick) and "Jasper" (born 1991 at ???). "Tanya" gave birth to "Susanna" in 1998 (sire: "Tonka") and a male in 2006 (sire: "Tonka"), who was send to Berlin Zoo. "Susanna" gave birth to a male in 2006 (sire: "Jasper"; the male now at Cottbus Zoo) and a female in 2009 (sire: "Jasper"). "Tonka" and "Tanya" died in 2011/2012, so Wuppertal is keeping "Susanna", "Jasper" and their female offspring from 2009 at the moment.

Thanks for that information. I noticed there was one animal which wasn't allowed outdoors which seemed to be in quite poor condition - do you know anything about that? This was around May 2011
