These zoos have different owners, different style of exhibits, specialize in completely different animals, and yet are right next to each other. It's remarkable. These two places, plus Bali Zoo and Taman Safari III Bali, means that the island of Bali has a really nice selection of animals between the 4 zoological collections. The only major flaw is the cost, as Bali is FAR more expensive than Java.
