Baltimore Zoo - Old cage by the zoo exit

Old cage by the zoo exit. Baltimore Zoo was much outdated into the late 1990s but the past decade has seen a lot of change. It is nonetheless full of historic brick exhibits and iron cages, sometimes remains and sometimes entire units, sometimes sealed off and sometimes for anyone to see and photograph. For me as zoo historian it was great to see these but I realise that they may bother some.

I remember these exhibits when I was younger and made frequent trips to the zoo with my preschool and elementary school (this was in the '90s). They had all sorts of animals here. If I can remember correctly they had tigers, jaguars, pumas, and some other cat species. I also remember the bear exhibits, one of which had a beloved grizzly bear. When the zoo ran into money problems in 2003, they had to shut down the historic part. They recently converted the old grizzly exhibit into a prairie dog exhibit. I really need to get back to this zoo; I miss it too much!

When you came to Los Angeles did you visit the old Griffith Park Zoo?

No, unfortunately, don't even think I saw the 'new' LA Zoo properly, I did it in good parts of two days but would have liked to have two full days. Is it close to the present zoo?

Yeah, I think it's about a mile or two from the LA Zoo. As a zoo historian I'm sure you would have loved it! Most of the exhibits left, which include cages and grottoes, are from 1912 when the zoo opened. What is cool about it is that people are allowed to go into the exhibits and night quarters, making the experience even better!

Hopefully next time you come back to the states you could visit both the old and new LA Zoo.
